Drive-By Truckers - Decoration Day (2003)
By now we’re all familiar with Mr. Jason Isbell, before the
solo career most of us probably think of first he had a 6-year tenure with
Drive-By Truckers. 2003’s Decoration Day is
their first record to feature him on guitar, he is also the writer of the album’s
title track.
Truckers ain’t for everyone, that’s for damn sure, the vocals
are definitely an acquired taste. That being said, they are for me and I
consider myself a pretty big fan of their work. I liked this album, I would
consider it essential listening for modern alt-country fans as well. It isn’t
my favorite, Sounds Better in the Song was
a tough listen for me, not because of the lyrics or the music, but the fact the
recording sounds like I’m listening to it out of a couple string bean cans and
a piece of twine.
Highlights: “Sinkhole”
and “My Sweet Annette”. The
former is a nice, pounding, southern rock track. Better yet, it’s (loosely)
based on the short film The Accountant starring
everyone’s favorite, Walton Goggins. The latter I definitely wouldn’t describe
as pounding, it’s less rock and more country, and I find the chorus pretty catchy.
